Victims Unit supported interment of Carlos Pizarro’s remains

On Sunday, around 300 people gathered in a commemoration held 25 years after the assassination of Carlos Pizarro Leongómez, who was chief of the Movimiento 19 de abril (M-19) between 1986 and 1990, and killed on the 26th of April 1990, when he was running for president as a candidate of the political party Alianza Democrática M-19. The event served to bury Pizarro’s remains in the Central Cemetery of Bogotá.

On Sunday, around 300 people gathered in a commemoration held 25 years after the assassination of Carlos Pizarro Leongómez, who was chief of the Movimiento 19 de abril (M-19) between 1986 and 1990, and killed on the 26th of April 1990, when he was running for president as a candidate of the political party Alianza Democrática M-19. The event served to bury Pizarro’s remains in the Central Cemetery of Bogotá.

According to María Eugenia Morales, director of Reparations in the Victims Unit, ‘the entity has supported to the Pizarro family in the preparation of this event, and especially in the adaption of the grave where he was buried. It is a satisfaction measure, and also this sort of situations helps the family to cope with their mourning: 25 years have passed, and today many people accompanied the event.’  

María José, one of Pizarro’s daughters, said that ‘this is a collective mourning for all those who died when trying to build a different society […] This is a space of common memory,’ she concluded.
