The President of the Republic, Juan Manuel Santos Calderón, said on Thursday that 500,000 victims have been repaired during his administration. He showed a report on the comprehensive evaluation carried out by Harvard University on the topic of victims’ reparations in Colombia.
‘We have already repaired more than half a million people, half a million, with an investment over three trillion Colombian pesos, which has allowed them –by means of these reparations- their situation of vulnerability,’ the chief of the State said. He also said that the national government has complied with the plans.
‘We committed to take care of the victims, to repair them even when the conflict is not over. That is unprecedented. Today, we can say we have accomplished that commitment, and the reparations process is a reality,’ he added.
President Santos informed that, according to the Harvard’s study, ‘Colombia has already compensated more victims than any other country in the world history.’ He also said that victims are in the center of the solution to the armed conflict.
‘The fact that victims have gone to Havana to meet both parts, Farc and Government, to express the way they would like to be repaired, that their rights are taking into account is unprecedented. First time it’s done in history,’ he said.
Nonetheless, after highlighting the work done by the Department for Social Prosperity (DPS) and the Victims Unit, President Santos stated that the challenge goes beyond that, since it is hoped that there is no more victims in the country.
‘The challenge is bigger: it’s not only about repairing the existing victims, but also about something all Colombians dream of: guaranteeing –once and for all- that there’s no more victims. That’s why we are looking for peace,’ concluded the President.
